Germany took third place at the World Cup for the second tournament in a row Saturday with an exciting 3-2 victory over Uruguay.

Uruguay, driven by striker Diego Forlan, almost forced extra time. Forlan’s free kick crashed against the crossbar in injury time, the last kick of the match.

The match was heading for extra time at 2-2 when Sami Khedira scored a late header. The goal ended Uruguay’s hopes of beating Germany for the first time in 82 years, while the Germans finished in the top three for the 11th time.

“We had hoped for more, and we did everything for it,” Khedira said. “This was some kind of final and we did everything for it. We have a young team and … can reach higher.”

Forlan said after the game that Uruguay had surpassed expectations. “Obviously it’s spectacular to be among the top four,” he said. “If anyone had asked us at the beginning, we would’ve liked it. It’s positive.”

Germany coach Joachim Loew, his voice hoarse from flu, said that his team was going home “with a very good feeling.”

“We achieved more than we perhaps expected,” Loew said. “Immediately after this match there is no reason to be disappointed. After the match against Spain everyone was disappointed. But champions rise again.”

“We have every reason to be fully satisfied with our tournament. There is no room for disappointment.”

Uruguay had come from behind to lead 2-1 when Forlan volleyed in Egidio Arevalo’s 51st-minute cross for his fifth goal of the tournament. Germany defender Marcell Jansen leveled five minutes later with a header after goalkeeper Fernando Muslera misjudged a cross.

“I think the match was a real match. They staged a great show,” Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said.

Loew also thought both teams played with passion.

“It was obvious tonight both teams wanted to win and not go home empty handed. I have to congratulate the teams on the effort they made and particularly my team when they were trailing,” Loew said.

Man-of-the match Thomas Mueller, coming back from suspension in the semifinal, gave Germany the lead in the 18th minute, his fifth goal at the World Cup, sweeping the ball home after Bastian Schweinsteiger’s swerving shot had been blocked but not collected by Muslera, who was at fault in Germany’s first two goals.

Edinson Cavani equalized for Uruguay in the 28th when he slid a shot past goalkeeper Hans-Joerg Butt.

Uruguay has beaten Germany only once in 10 matches, in 1928. Germany beat Uruguay in the third-place match in 1970—the last time Uruguay reached the semifinals.

Carles Puyol soared high to head in the goal that sent Spain into the World Cup final for the first time with a 1-0 win over Germany on Wednesday.

In a rematch of the 2008 European Championship final that Spain won by the same score, Puyol leaped high in the center of the area in the 73rd minute to score from Xavi Hernandez’s corner kick, finally giving Spain the lead after having dominated from the opening whistle.

Spain’s best previous World Cup finish was fourth in 1950, when the final round consisted of a four-team group.

In Sunday’s final at Soccer City, Spain will meet the Netherlands, which has also never won football’s biggest trophy.

Netherlands pushed Uruguay aside with a 3-2 victory on Tuesday to reach their 3rd World Cup final and set up an all-European clash with Spain or Germany.

Two goals in three minutes midway through the second half from Wesley Sneijder, his fifth of the tournament, and Arjen Robben gave Netherlands a 3-1 lead but Maximiliano Pereira gave them some nervous moments with a late goal in time added on.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst had given the Dutch an early lead with a long-range drive before Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan equalised just before halftime, also with a superb strike.

European champions Spain play Germany in Durban in the other semi-final on Wednesday with the winners playing Netherlands in Sunday’s World Cup final at Soccer City in Johannesburg.

It will be Europe’s 10th World Cup win in 19 finals but the first by a European side outside their own continent. The Dutch lost both their previous finals in 1974 and 1978 to West Germany and Argentina respectively.

Villa banked in the only goal of Spain’s 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the World Cup quarterfinals off not one post, but both of them. Villa took the tournament scoring lead with his fifth goal, in the 83rd minute, setting off a crescendo of blaring vuvuzelas in the stadium and further cementing his status as his nation’s top player.

His goal Saturday night finished off a brilliant, three-way passing combination that typifies the way the European champions like to play. It sent Spain into the World Cup’s final four for the first time in 60 years and highlighted a chaotic second half.

“The post wanted it to go in,” Villa said.

Now Spain faces Germany on Wednesday in Durban—a reprise of its 1-0 victory in the Euro 2008 final.

“Every game is different,” Villa added. “I’m sure Germany isn’t happy we got through.”

One night after penalty kicks decided Uruguay’s shootout win over Ghana, they were critical in Spain’s victory as a somewhat subdued match suddenly got wild in a two-minute span of the second half.

Gerard Pique pulled down Paraguay’s Oscar Cardozo in the penalty area on a corner kick, earning a yellow card and giving Cardozo a penalty kick.

With a stadium full of vuvuzelas reaching a crescendo, the striker who ended his team’s shootout win over Japan was denied brilliantly this time by Iker Casillas, who dived left to block Cardozo’s low kick.

“He will know this is the way of football,” Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino said. “This can happen. It’s important for him not to feel bad.”

Seconds later, Villa broke free behind the defense and was hauled down by Antolin Alcoraz, who drew a yellow card. Xabi Alonso went to the penalty spot and sent a wicked drive into the net.

Again, the stadium rocked, but referee Carlos Batres of Guatemala waved off the goal, saying a Spain player entered the area too soon.

Given a second chance, keeper Justo Villar guessed correctly, diving left to stop the penalty kick. He also knocked the rebound away from Cesc Fabregas before defender Paulo Da Silva made a leg save at the goal line on another shot by Sergio Ramos.

After that wild sequence, it seemed anything was possible.

And for Spain, anything is possible with Villa on the field. Not only is he the Spaniards’ best finisher, but he’s a sparkplug with his darting runs and imaginative moves.

“He’s at the top of his form,” coach Vicente del Bosque said. “He’s first to the ball every time. Villa had that hunger for the goal that allowed him to convert.”

That goal came off the kind of attack that has carried Spain toward the top of the soccer world. Andres Iniesta surged through the Paraguay defense and passed to the right to Pedro, whose right-footed kick slammed off the goalpost.

The rebound came to Silva, and his shot hit the far post, then—amazingly— caromed across the net, off the left post and in.

Fans for both teams wore red and blended into the color scheme of the seats in Ellis Park Stadium. Even if you couldn’t see them so well, you sure could hear their vuvuzelas blaring, especially when Silva scored.

But Paraguay, a nation that never has been a factor at the World Cup and hasn’t won a major title since Copa America in 1979, wasn’t about to fold. The final six minutes of regulation and three minutes of extra time featured free-flowing soccer at both ends, and Casillas once again had to rescue the Spaniards.(Source)

Germany crushed Argentina 4-0 with a sparkling display of attacking football on Saturday to book their spot in the World Cup last four.

Germany, who outsmarted their lacklustre opponents, got off to a dream start when Thomas Mueller snatched his fourth goal of the tournament, heading in a curled Bastian Schweinsteiger free kick after just three minutes.

Miroslav Klose, making his 100th international appearance, doubled Germany’s lead in the 68th minute when Lukas Podolski out in a perfect pass from the left and the striker tapped in from close range.

Defender Arne Friedrich got a third with his first international goal in the 74th minute, finishing from a metre out after Bastian Schweinsteiger’s cross, before Klose completed the rout with his second in the 89th minute.

Dictating the pace early in the first half, Germany refused to fall back after their quick lead, pressing high in Argentina’s half and coming close to a second through Sami Khedira and Klose.

Germany, who beat Argentina on penalties at the same stage of the tournament in 2006, gradually allowed their opponents to come forward, and responding with lightning-quick counter-attacks.

The Argentines, with playmaker Lionel Messi often stifled by two or three defenders, tried desperately to level with long-range shots before Klose doubled the German lead.

Friedrich then added the third six minutes later, before Klose volleyed home a cross from Mesut Ozil for the fourth and his 14th World Cup goal, just one short of Ronaldo’s all time record.

Uruguay reached the World Cup semifinals for the first time since 1970, beating Ghana 4-2 on penalties Friday after the last African team in the tournament was denied victory by a cynical handball and a missed penalty in the last seconds of extra time.

The two-time champion Uruguayans advanced to face the Netherlands in the semifinals after Sebastian Abreu casually chipped the last penalty straight down the middle to secure the win, after a 1-1 draw following 120 minutes of play.

Asamoah Gyan had a chance to secure Africa’s first ever World Cup semifinal spot for Ghana, but he hit the crossbar with a penalty after Uruguay forward Luis Suarez was sent off for handling the ball on the line.

Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera then made two important saves in the shootout.

“To be among the four best (teams) in the world, there are no words for that,” said Uruguay forward Diego Forlan, who scored a second-half equalizer with a free kick in the 55th minute. “We felt we were going to faint with each penalty.”

Gyan, who’d converted penalties to secure a win over Serbia and a draw against Australia in the group stage, bit his jersey and walked away with his back to the goal when he missed the chance to secure a semifinal spot.

“It has been a very difficult moment,” Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi said in a television interview. “Our boys played very well, beautiful football.

“If it was meant for us, less than a second to go, we would have won the match. It has been a terrible moment for the entire continent, not just for our nation.”

Gyan put it down to “hard luck,” but was convinced the ball had crossed the line before Suarez touched it, and the goal should have counted.

“We had (an) opportunity to win this game but unfortunately that is football for you,” Gyan said. “The ball went in, it did cross the line, and the referee disallowed it.”

In regulation, Sulley Muntari gave Ghana the lead with a 35-meter (yard) left-foot strike seconds before halftime, but Forlan equalized with a curling, 20-meter (yard) free kick from the left 10 minutes after the break.

Ghana picked up the tempo in the dying stages of extra time and had other chances to win.

Kevin-Prince Boateng missed with a header in the 118th in the midst of three defenders. He sent in a cross from the left in the next minute which Muslera had to save at the near post.

Suarez was given a direct red card in the last minute for batting away Dominic Adiyiah’s header with his arms after he’d already blocked Stephen Appiah’s shot on the line.

After Gyan missed the ensuing penalty, Muslera kissed his glove and touched it to the bar, and Suarez ran into the tunnel pumping his arms and celebrating the reprieve. He was later hoisted onto the shoulders of his teammates as they celebrated the win.

Forlan said Suarez had saved the game for Uruguay. Coach Oscar Tabarez defended Suarez from suggestions he’d cheated Ghana out of a win, saying his handball was nothing more than an instinctive act.

“He was thrown out of the game, what else do you do with Suarez?” Tabarez said. “Do you blame Suarez for Ghana missing the penalty? I don’t like the word cheating. I don’t think the word is fair.”

Support for Ghana has continued to grow this week as the only one of six African teams in the tournament to progress past the group stage.

Red, yellow and green flags with the black star at its center were all around the stadium as people united to support the last team from the continent still in the first World Cup on African soil.

The partisan 84,017-strong crowd booed loudly when Forlan was successful with the first penalty of the shootout, and cheered wildly when Gyan angled his first shot into the top right corner to make it 1-1.

Ghana captain John Mensah was the first to miss, giving Uruguay a 3-2 cushion, but the Africans stayed alive when Maximiliano Pereira missed the next shot and the crowd cheered wildly again.

But when Adiyiah’s next kick was saved by Muslera, Africa’s exit was almost sealed.

After Abreu secured the win, Gyan was inconsolable as he left the field in tears.

Uruguay, which won the World Cup in 1930 and 1950 but hasn’t been to the semifinals in 40 years, was the fifth and last South American team to qualify for the 2010 edition when it beat Costa Rica in an intercontinental playoff.

Ghana was unable to improve on Africa’s best showing at the quadrennial tournament. Cameroon was the first to reach the quarterfinals in 1990 and Senegal matched that in 2002.

Uruguay started strongly, dominating the opening 30 minutes, with Forlan and Suarez finding space and creating opportunities that they were unable to convert.

Kingson stopped Suarez’ shot in the 11th and punched away Forlan’s 40-yard free kick in the 15th. The goalkeeper then stopped one chance with his face in the 18th after it deflected off Mensah’s chest.

Then it was Ghana’s turn to attack, with Gyan, Boateng and Muntari having opportunities in the 15 minutes before halftime.

Boateng’s was the most spectacular, with his bicycle kick in front of goal to Samuel Inkoom’s chipped pass sailing over the just crossbar.

Wesley Sneijder headed a second-half winner as Netherlands came from behind to beat ten-man Brazil 2-1 on Friday and book their place in the World Cup semi-finals.

Brazil, the five-times champions, took a 10th minute lead in the quarter-final clash through Robinho and dominated the first-half against a Dutch team which initially looked outclassed.

But the Dutch levelled out of the blue in the 53rd minute after a rare mistake from Brazil’s usually impenetrable defence, as Felipe Melo headed Sneijder’s cross into his own goal.

Then Sneijder headed a winner as the Dutch avenged a quarter-final defeat in 1994 and a semi-final defeat four years later.

Felipe Melo, returning from an ankle injury which kept him out of the second round match against Chile, set up the first goal after 10 minutes.

He threaded a 30-metre pass through the Dutch midfield and Robinho timed his run perfectly to score with a first-time shot past Maarten Stekelenburg.

The game turned niggly, although Brazil managed to produced a some flowing moves and should have extended their lead.

Juan volleyed over from close range after a jinking run on the right by Dani Alves and Stekelenburg produced a superb one-handed save to tip away Kaka’s curling effort, following a dazzling Robinho run down the left.

The Dutch rarely threatened with Arjen Robben far too predictable to outfox the Brazil rearguard.

But they levelled out of the blue eight minutes after the break when Felipe Melo touched Sneijder’s looping cross-shot into his own net.

Kaka missed an excellent chance to put Brazil back ahead, side-footing wide from the edge of the area after the ball was gifted to him by a poor clearance.

They paid dearly in the 68th minute when Dirk Kuyt flicked on Arjen Robben’s corner at the near post and Sneijder headed into the net.

Shortly afterwards, Felipe Melo was sent off for stamping on Robben.

European champions Spain won their way into the last eight and a meeting with Paraguay on the back of a powerhouse second-half display though the 1-0 margin meant Portugal remained in the hunt until the final whistle.

David Villa finished off a move of Spanish perfection to finally break down Portugal’s defensive wall Tuesday and give the European champions a 1-0 win and spot in the World Cup quarterfinals.

Villa scored his fourth goal of the tournament in the 63rd minute, while Cristiano Ronaldo again failed to inspire Portugal.

A trademark Spanish passing move found Andres Iniesta in the center. He flicked the ball through to Xavi Hernandez, who backheeled to Villa charging in on the left.

The Barcelona-bound striker saw his first shot blocked by Portugal goalkeeper Eduardo, but on the rebound, he coolly slotted home with his right foot.

Portugal’s only defensive weakness had been on its right flank, where Ricardo Costa struggled. He was sent off for elbowing Joan Capdevila in the 89th minute, stifling a late Portuguese drive.

Spain will now play Paraguay in the quarterfinals on Saturday at Ellis Park.

Exactly two years after Spain ended a 44-year drought by winning the European Championship, the team stayed on course to become the first European titlist to add the World Cup since West Germany did it in 1974.

Spain was about teamwork, and it showed from the start. Fernando Torres and Villa immediately moved down the left, looking to exploit Portugal’s weakness on right back. Within the first seven minutes, Eduardo had to make three quality saves to keep Portugal in the game on angled shots from Spain’s two strikers.

Yet strangely enough, Spain did not continue to pound Portugal’s weak right side and instead settled for the intricate passing game through the center it has become famous for.

Once Portugal’s defense settled, it proved why it has one of the best in the world, conceding only one goal in its last 12 matches. It clogged play in the center and Spain got frustrated to the extent that it was reduced to long-range attempts Gerard Pique.

Portugal’s problem was that Ronaldo was yet again off form. Right before the opening whistle, he looked up at the night sky and started pleading with his arms outstretched, almost begging to finally make his mark on a huge game.

The heavens didn’t respond.

Brazil moved closer to a sixth World Cup title on Monday, beating South American rival Chile 3-0 to reach the quarterfinals.

Juan, Luis Fabiano and Robinho scored a goal each at Ellis Park.

“It was a very good performance for Brazil,” playmaker Kaka said. “I’m happy with how we played. It shows that we are improving after each match, just as planned.”

Center back Juan gave his team the lead in the 35th minute with a firm header from a corner, sending the ball into the upper left corner and past the outstretched arms of Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

Luis Fabiano added to the lead from a fast breakaway in the 38th, receiving a one-touch pass from Kaka and rounding Bravo before scoring into an open net. Robinho started the play with a run on the left side before finding Kaka at the edge of the area.

Robinho then scored his first goal in World Cups with a shot from the edge of the area in the 59th. Ramires’ strong run drew three defenders, and he laid the ball off for Robinho to shoot inside the far post.

It was Robinho’s seventh goal in Brazil’s past six matches against Chile. He put his hands into the air in celebration at the final whistle, rushing to hug his teammates at midfield.

“I’m very happy with my first goal in a World Cup and with the victory of my team,” Robinho said.

Brazil’s quarterfinal opponent will be the Netherlands, which beat Slovakia 2-1 earlier Monday in Durban.

Chile became the first of the five South American teams to be eliminated from the World Cup. Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay are still in the tournament along with Brazil.

Brazil has now reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup every time since the 1990 tournament in Italy, when it lost to Argentina in the second round. Brazil coach Dunga and assistant coach Jorginho were starters in that Brazil team.

The victory in front of nearly 55,000 fans at Ellis Park was Brazil’s eighth consecutive win over Chile, and the result extended Brazil’s unbeaten streak against its continental rival to 10 matches. The last loss came in a World Cup qualifier in 2000.

Argentina needed a couple of breaks in its second round World Cup match. It got one from the referee and another from Mexico.

Carlos Tevez scored twice—once on a disputed goal—and Gonzalo Higuain added another as the Albiceleste beat Mexico 3-1 on Sunday to move into the quarterfinals.

“We’re not here on vacation, we came here to leave everything so that the Argentines can be proud of us,” coach Diego Maradona said.

With Mexico getting the best scoring chances early on, Tevez headed in a pass from Lionel Messi in the 26th minute from close in. One problem: He was clearly offside.

Referee Roberto Rosetti of Italy awarded the goal after consulting with his linesman, the pair surrounded by angrily gesturing Mexican and Argentine players.

Then in the 33rd minute, Higuain rounded the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 after Mexico’s Ricardo Osorio, under no pressure, played the ball straight into his path. In the 52nd Tevez blasted in one of the tournament’s best goal, an unstoppable shot from 25 yards.

“Two mistakes … drastically changed the course of the game,” Mexico coach Javier Aguirre said. “There was a before and after.”

The call on Tevez’s first goal came just hours after the referee at Germany’s 4-1 win over England failed to recognize that a shot by England’s Frank Lampard, which would have tied the score at 2-2 late in the first half, clearly made it across the goal line after striking the crossbar.

Argentina, which also beat Mexico in round of 16 four years ago now plays Germany in the quarterfinals. That’s a rematch, too—a repeat of the 2006 quarterfinals, which the Germans won. The Germans also defeated Argentina in the 1990 World Cup final.

Kevin Prince Boateng put Ghana ahead when he stripped the ball from Ricardo Clark in the 5th minute and beat goalkeeper Tim Howard from 16 yards.

Once again, the U.S. came back, and Landon Donovan tied the score with a penalty kick in the 62nd minute after Jonathan Mensah pulled down Clint Dempsey streaking in. But no matter how much the Americans pressured after Gyan scored, they couldn’t tie it again.

A spectacular left-foot strike by Asamoah Gyan in extra time sent Ghana into the World Cup quarter-final.Gyan ran onto a long ball from midfield, shrugged off two defenders and fired home a venomous shot that sees Ghana match the best previous performance by African teams at a World Cup.

The goal came after Ghana had been subjected to long periods of sustained American pressure with the teams having gone into extra time with the score tied at 1-1.

Ghana, who face Uruguay in the last eight on Friday at Soccer City in Johannesburg, are only the third African team to reach the quarters after Cameroon in 1990 and Senegal in 2002.

The U.S. had fought back strongly after a sluggish first half, in which they fell behind to a fifth-minute goal from Kevin-Prince Boateng.

Landon Donovan, who had been the hero of their dramatic qualification for the knockout stage in midweek, equalised just after the hour mark from the penalty spot.

German-born Boateng, who qualified to play for Ghana on the eve of the finals, stole the ball from Ricardo Clark in midfield and ran on to fire home from the edge of the area in a perfect start for Africa’s last representatives at this World Cup.

Ghana’s teenage defender Jonathan Mensah gave away a 62nd minute penalty when he brought down Clint Dempsey.

Donovan struck his spot kick in off the post to give the Americans a deserved equaliser as they suddenly found the energy to stage what has become a customary second-half rally.

Jozy Altidore might have snatched victory for the Americans 10 minutes from the end of normal time after getting the better of the Ghana defence, but hooked his shot wide.

Andres Iniesta had a goal for Spain as his team beat Chile 2-1 to claim the top billing in Group H. Chile also advanced to the knockout phase.

David Villa and Andres Iniesta scored first-half goals as Spain beat 10-man Chile 2-1 on Friday, sending both teams into the round of 16 at the World Cup.

Villa scored from 45 meters (yards) in the 24th minute at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. He ran on to a loose ball and curled a left-footed shot into an open goal after Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo had rushed out of the area to clear the ball.

“David’s goal was very important because it occurred at a time when it was very uncomfortable for us,” Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta said. “After the goal, we felt more comfortable on the pitch.”

It was 2-0 in the 37th when Iniesta, who returned from a right leg injury, jumped on a loose ball in midfield and worked it to Villa down the left. Villa drew two defenders before passing back to Iniesta to side-foot a right-footed shot past Bravo.

Chile’s hopes of a comeback were dented when Marco Estrada was sent off, booked for a second time during the buildup to the second goal. Drafted into the side to replace the suspended Carlos Carmona as holding midfielder, Estrada was shown his first yellow card in the 21st and then a red for tripping Fernando Torres.

Despite being down to ten men, Chile got a goal back when substitute Rodrigo Millar scored in the 47th from a shot that deflected off Spain’s Gerard Pique.

The Swiss, despite being more physically imposing, were very disappointing and strangely displayed a lack of zest given the high stakes while Honduras played the more attractive soccer.

Ivory Coast bowed out of the World Cup in style.

Needing an offensive show and a little bit of luck to make the second round, the Elephants got the offense but not the luck.

Yaya Toure, Koffi Romaric N’Dri and Salomon Kalou each scored Friday in a 3-0 win over North Korea, thrilling a pro-Ivory Coast crowd.

The only problem was that the Ivorians needed Portugal to lose to Brazil, then had to make up a nine-goal difference with the Portuguese to have a chance of moving on.

And Portugal tied Group G winner Brazil 0-0 to advance.

“Our World Cup is over today,” Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba said. “But I think we can be proud of what we did against Portugal and against Brazil — even if we lost—and today.

“It was difficult for us to go through, and I think the FIFA rankings have been respected,” Drogba said. “We are disappointed, but at the same time we cannot be too disappointed when we’re in a group like this.”

Earlier in group play, Ivory Coast tied Portugal 0-0 and lost to Brazil 3-1.

North Korea lost all three of its matches, giving up 12 goals and scoring just one in its first World Cup appearance since 1966. The team from the isolated, communist regime was a tournament curiosity, and never proved to be anything more.

The Koreans put up their best effort in a 2-1 loss to Brazil, then were routed by Portugal 7-0 and beaten soundly by the more physical Ivorians.

Ivory Coast attacked all day, outshooting the Koreans 28-9.

“I think the players were very, very good,” Ivory Coast coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said. “It’s a pity we have to leave, because this team is getting better and better every session. But that’s life. We’re out. We have to accept that.”

Ghana is the only one of six African teams in the World Cup to advance to the round of 16.

Portugal came into the match with a comfortable goal differential to just about guarantee its spot in the round of 16 even with a loss.

Brazil coach Dunga blamed Portugal’s defensive setup for the lackluster result.

“We played to win, but our opponent didn’t,” Dunga said. “We always tried to attack, but they only tried to take advantage of our mistakes.”

Brazil plays the runner-up in Group H on Monday in Johannesburg.

“Portugal came playing back, trying to use Cristiano Ronaldo on the counterattacks,” Julio Cesar said. “It was a difficult group so it was good to finish first. Now the hard part begins and we can’t lose anymore.”

Portugal faces the Group H winner Tuesday in Cape Town. Not surprisingly, its coach blamed Brazil for the lack of offense.

“Brazil played very strongly in the first few minutes, but after that initial period of domination Portugal slowly started to control the game. In the end, the draw was a fair result,” coach Carlos Queiroz said.

“Portugal advanced with merits and now we have to start thinking about our next matches. It was a difficult match for Brazil and for us.”

Both teams had good chances, but failed to capitalize at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The match was one of the most-anticipated in the group stage, a meeting between two talented teams known for their attacking style. Brazil came into the tournament as the top-ranked team, while Portugal is No. 3. Both teams had dominating wins in the previous match, with Brazil beating Ivory Coast 3-1 and Portugal routing North Korea 7-0.

The result kept alive a 19-match unbeaten streak for Portugal, which hasn’t lost since a 6-2 defeat at Brazil in a 2008 friendly. It halted Brazil’s seven-match winning streak.

The Netherlands produced its first goals of flair and finesse to beat Cameroon 2-1 and set up a second-round match with Slovakia.

Robin Van Persie finished off an end-to-end move in the 36th minute, and substitute Arjen Robben sent a shot against the post in the 83rd that Klaas Jan Huntelaar only had to slide in for the winner.

In between, Samuel Eto’o scored on penalty kick for Cameroon.

The Dutch won Group E with three victories. They play Slovakia on Monday in Durban.

Cameroon lost all three of its matches.

Playing with poise and confidence, the Dutch often thrilled the crowd of 63,093 with their creative moves. Yet Eto’o and Cameroon often were able to pierce the defense and threaten goalie Maarten Stekelenburg.

In the 73rd minute, the tens of thousands of orange-clad fans in the Green Point Stadium cheered when Robben made his debut at the World Cup almost three weeks after sustaining a left hamstring injury in a warmup game. He immediately showed his value.

After tiptoeing carefully during his first moves, he was served a pass on the right wing 10 minutes after coming on. With a move so often seen during his sterling season with Bayern Munich, he cut inside, beat defenders and curled a shot past goalkeeper Hamidou Souleymanou. It crashed against the post and Huntelaar was in the right place to give the Netherlands the win.

“He showed he can really break open any game,” Netherlands defender John Heitinga said of Robben.

After two victories, coach Bert van Marwijk sought to keep the momentum and played both midfielder Nigel de Jong and Van Persie, even though both would have been excluded from the Slovakia game if they drew another yellow card.

Instead, Van Persie scored a typical Dutch goal in the 36th minute, one that flowed from defense to attack with crisp, pinpoint passing and ended with a precise shot.

After Dirk Kuyt took the ball up the right side, Van Persie played a neat one-two with Rafael van der Vaart, and then shot through the legs of Souleymanou from a tight angle.

Cameroon, which put Africa on the soccer map when it reached the quarterfinals of the 1990 World Cup, did not give up. Van der Vaart handled a free kick by Geremi in the area. Eto’o scored on the penalty kick.

Late in the game, Cameroon defender Rigobert Song made a cameo appearance in his fourth World Cup.

First-half free kick goals from Keisuke Honda and Yusuhito Endo helped give Japan a 3-1 win over Denmark on Thursday and send the Asian country into the round of 16 of the World Cup.

The Danes replied in the 81st when Jon Dahl Tomasson tapped in the rebound from his own penalty kick, but Shinji Okazaki slotted into an empty net in the 87th to seal the win.

Japan took a 2-0 lead after goals from free kicks within a space of less than 15 minutes as the Japanese collected their second victory in Group E. They ended in second place on six points compared with three for Denmark.

The Japanese reached the knockout round for the second time, and will meet Paraguay. They also progressed in 2002 when they were co-hosts, but missed out in two other editions.

“For Japan it’s a big win,” Honda said. “I’m glad we won but I am not satisfied. The next game is more important. I want to show the Japanese that nothing is impossible.”

Denmark failed to advance from the group stage for the first time in four World Cup appearances.

Honda got his and Japan’s second goal of the tournament in the 17th with a blistering free kick from the right of the Danish area which went over the wall and swerved beyond Thomas Sorensen’s reach into the far corner. The Danish goalkeeper seemed fooled by the dipping swerve, diving late and failing to get his hands on the ball.

Cahill put the Australians ahead with a glancing header from Luke Wilkshire’s cross in the 69th minute and Holman added the second from long range four minutes later.

“A lot of respect for the lads. We’ve been through some hard times here,” said Cahill, who was sent off in the team’s opening match. “I’m just buzzing to hit the back of the net because this time last week my World Cup was over.”

Marko Pantelic pulled a goal back for Serbia in the 84th, and then had a chance for a late equalizer but couldn’t control a bouncing ball. If Serbia had drawn, the team would have advanced ahead of Ghana.

“I’m just disappointed we don’t go through. We have four points, I thought it might be enough,” Australia coach Pim Verbeek said. “In the end the goal difference against Germany killed us.”

Germany beat Ghana 1-0 after a second-half goal from Mesut Oezil to win Group D and set up a second-round World Cup clash with traditional rival England.

Ghana also advanced despite Wednesday’s loss at Soccer City and became the first African team to make the round of 16 at the first World Cup held on the continent.

Germany won the group with six points and Ghana was second with four, going through on goal difference thanks to Australia’s 2-1 victory over Serbia in the other match.

Oezil rifled a left-footed shot from outside the area into the left corner of the net to break the deadlock in the 60th minute after both teams had wasted a number of chances.

“I simply shot the ball,” said Oezil, who was voted man of the match. “I had a lot of support from my teammates. It doesn’t matter whom we play next, we have to keep winning.”

Once the scoreboard had flashed the result of the other match, Ghana players celebrated their progress, waving the country’s flag and running to the corner where their supporters were.

The Black Stars went through thanks to their 1-0 win over Serbia and a 1-1 draw with Australia.

“It was a very difficult match but we fought and it was enough to get us through,” said Ghana midfielder Andre Ayew. “We had opportunities but the important thing is that we went through.”

England finished second in Group C behind the United States and will now face the Germans in Bloemfontein on Sunday. Ghana will play the United States on Saturday in Rustenburg.

“There is no time to celebrate, the next match is very close,” Ghana’s Serbian coach Milan Rajevac said. “We knew it would be a tough match because to try to qualify against Germany is really hard. We played quite well, we resisted well, we had some chances but they had to win and they showed that they are among the best teams in the world.”

Germany had been in danger of failing to advance from the group stage for the first time but the three-time champions had the upper hand throughout the match, without taking unnecessary risks.

Ghana also had some chances and Kwadwo Asamoah ran through in the 51st minute but shot weakly at goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

The United States scored a last-gasp winner to beat Algeria and qualify for the last 16 of the World Cup after a pulsating and even match in which both sides had plenty of chances.

Landon Donovan got the vital U.S. winner in the second minute of injury time.

The Group C match had its first chance within 12 seconds, but Karim Ziani’s volley from outside the penalty box flew just wide of Tim Howard’s goal.

Algeria came close again in the sixth minute with another volley, Rafik Djebbour taking advantage of a mistake by defender Jay DeMerit to send his shot crashing against the bar.

The Americans responded just moments later with a powerful drive by striker Hercules Gomez forcing keeper Rais Ouheb Mbouli to palm away for a corner.

The United States had a goal disallowed late in their 2-2 draw with Slovenia and were frustrated again when Clint Dempsey’s 20th minute tap in from a Gomez assist was judged offside.

Dempsey threatened again on 57 minutes when a Jozy Altidore cross fell to him near the penalty spot, but his curling shot hit the post.

Seven minutes later the United States pushed forward once more when Benny Feilhaber, who came on at halftime for Gomez, put in a dangerous cross which forced Mbouli to a reflex save with his outstretched leg.

The United States looked the more dangerous side, but the Algerians gave them occasional scares such as Hassan Yebda’s 68th minute fierce strike that went wide after a flowing counter-attack.

Donovan put the United States ahead right at the death and there was still time for Antar Yahia to be sent off for a second yellow card.

England joined the United States in the next round from Group C with a 1-0 win over Slovenia.

Martin Demichelis and Martin Palermo scored second-half goals Tuesday to help Argentina beat Greece 2-0 at the World Cup and earn the two-time world champions first place in Group B.

Argentina will play Mexico in the round of 16 on Sunday, while Greece has been eliminated.

Demichelis scored from short range in the 77th minute after his header bounced off Diego Milito and back into his path. Palermo doubled the score in the 89th from a rebound after Greece goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas had saved a shot by Lionel Messi.

Although their game was less fluent than in previous matches, the two-time world champions dominated the match, espcially in the first half at the 45,000-capacity Peter Mokaba Stadium, where Argentina fans clearly outnumbered their Greek counterparts.

South Korea reached the second round of the World Cup by holding Nigeria to a 2-2 draw Tuesday in their final group game.

Defender Lee Jung-soo and Park Chu-young scored for South Korea after Kalu Uche had given Nigeria the lead in the 12th minute. Ayegbeni Yakubu netted a 69th minute penalty to draw Nigeria level again, but the Africans squandered a couple of good opportunities to score a winner.

Argentina won Group B by beating Greece 2-0 in the other match, meaning Nigeria would have advanced with a win despite losing their first two games. Argentina won all three games to finish with nine points, while South Korea had four points, Greece three and Nigeria one.

The only other time the Koreans got beyond the group stage was when the team surged to the semifinals in 2002 on home soil as tournament co-host with Japan.

That stunning run, ended by a 1-0 loss to Germany, turned South Korea’s Dutch coach Guus Hiddink into a national hero.

The Korean substitutes sprinted onto the field and hugged their teammates at the final whistle and danced in front of a small group of flag-waving fans.

Portugal put on the most dominant performance of the World Cup, routing North Korea 7-0 on Monday and eliminating the Asian nation from the tournament.

Simao Sabrosa, Hugo Almeida and Tiago scored over an eight-minute span in the second half, after Raul Meireles’ 29th-minute goal gave Portugal the lead. Substitute Liedson added another in the 81st.

Cristiano Ronaldo ended his goalless streak the 87th minute, and Tiago added his second goal two minutes later. Ronaldo had not scored for his nation in a non-friendly match since the 2008 European Championship.

The win moves Portugal into second place in Group G with four points, two behind Brazil. The Ivory Coast has one point, and North Korea can’t advance in the tournament after two straight losses.

“This is a great result for us,” Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz said. “We have to continue now.”

North Korean state television aired live coverage of the Portugal match, in what was believed to be a first for a North Korean soccer game taking place abroad.

It was bad timing.

North Korea had early chances, but trouble began when Meireles latched on to a clever pass by Tiago and gave Portugal its first goal of the tournament. The score seemed to deflate the Koreans, while the Portuguese finally began to show some of the Latin flair that has made them an outside favorite to win their first championship.

“Tactically speaking, we fell apart and we couldn’t block their attacks,” North Korea coach Kim Jong Hun said. “It was my fault for not playing the right strategy and that is why we conceded a lot of goals.”

Played in a steady downpour, the wet field at Green Point Stadium caused errant passes as many players lost their footing.

The win gives Portugal a massive goal advantage if it ends up tied with Ivory Coast on points after the last match Friday. Portugal plays Brazil, which has already qualified for the second round, while Ivory Coast plays North Korea.

Luis Fabiano scored a pair of goals and Elano added another as Brazil beat Ivory Coast 3-1 Sunday to secure a spot in the second round of the World Cup with a match to spare in Group G.

Luis Fabiano scored his first goal in six matches for Brazil with a powerful right-footer in the 25th minute after a perfect pass between two defenders by Kaka. He jumped over defender Kolo Toure before firing into the top of the net from a difficult angle.

Luis Fabiano doubled the lead in the 50th with a left-footer from near the penalty spot after beating two defenders inside the area. TV replays appeared to show Luis Fabiano handling the ball to gain control.

Ivory Coast coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said Luis Fabiano handled the ball twice in the leadup to his second goal, which changed the course of the match.

“It shouldn’t have been allowed,” Eriksson said. “They got a goal free. That’s a 2-nil goal—that changed everything.

“It’s even more difficult if he’s allowed to use his hands. Of course it’s hand ball. It’s not once, it’s twice.”

Elano scored Brazil’s third goal in the 62nd after another setup by Kaka, who was sent off in the 88th after being booked twice within four minutes in a spiteful finish.

Didier Drogba, in the starting lineup for the first time since breaking his right arm on June 4, scored the lone goal for Ivory Coast with a header in the 79th.

It was a physical match at Soccer City, with hard fouls from both sides and players confronting each other at times. Kaka got into an altercation with Kader Keita near the end of the match and was ejected after a second yellow card.

The victory at Soccer City gives Brazil six points from two matches, leaving the Ivory Coast in difficult position to advance from the group stage. Portugal and North Korea play on Monday in Cape Town.

Brazil has won all six matches it has played against African nations in the World Cup. Drogba’s goal was the first Brazil conceded to African teams in football’s marquee tournament.

Dennis Rommedahl scored one goal and set up another to lead Denmark to a 2-1 comeback win over Cameroon on Saturday, eliminating the African team from the World Cup and sending the Netherlands to the round of 16.

Cameroon went ahead in the 10th minute when Samuel Eto’o took advantage of mixup in the Danish defense, but Denmark equalized in the 33rd when Rommedahl crossed from the right for Nicklas Bendtner to tap in.

Rommedahl scored the winner in the 61st. Picking up a pass from Jesper Gronkjaer, he spun around substitute Jean Makoun before hooking a well-aimed left-foot shot past Hamidou Souleymanou.

“It was a tough game until the last minute,” Rommedahl said. “We had a terrible start. But we created a lot of chances in the second half, when it became a more open game.”

The result means the Netherlands became the first team through to the second round. The Dutch have six points after beating Japan 1-0 earlier Saturday. Denmark and Japan have three points each, and will clash on Thursday to decide who joins the Netherlands into the knockout stage. Denmark will need a win, as a draw would send Japan through with a better goal difference.

Australia held on for a 1-1 draw despite Ghana’s man advantage for more than 66 minutes in the World Cup on Saturday, further tightening Group D.

Australia forward Brett Holman scored in the 11th minute after goalkeeper Richard Kingson bobbled a free kick from Mark Bresciano right into his path. Holman put the rebound past the keeper.

Harry Kewell led the Australian attack against Ghana as one of four changes to the team beaten by Germany. But he was given a red card in the 24th minute after he blocked a shot from Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah at the goal line with his upper arm.

Asamoah Gyan converted the penalty kick in the 25th minute for his second goal of the tournament, both from the penalty spot.

Ghana nearly went ahead two minutes later when Prince Tagoe’s close-range shot carried just wide, and again just before halftime. Forward Kevin-Prince Boateng made a speedy run down the right wing and fired his shot toward the far post. Goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer made a magnificent diving save.

Ghana tops Group D with four points, followed by Serbia and Germany with three each, Australia with one.

Australia coach Pim Verbeek still thinks there’s a chance to advance after Wednesday’s match against Serbia.

“We’re still in the race,” he said. “The boys were fighting for everything, and with everything they had. I can only be proud of the players.”

He said he didn’t’ see Kewell’s hand ball, but was told by his players it didn’t look intentional.

“There’s nothing we can do about it,” he said. “We go on.”

The Black Stars continually broke through Australia’s defense and threatened to score, but couldn’t finish. The 10-man Aussies also attacked and came close to a winner several times.

Australia got off to a fast start as it looked to rebound from a 4-0 defeat to Germany. Coach Pim Verbeek was heavily criticized for fielding a defensive lineup in that match and for not going with a recognized striker.

Sneijder’s 53rd-minute strike finally broke down Japan’s stubborn resistance, which had stifled Dutch creativity for much of the match. Robin van Persie laid the ball back and Sneijder sent a powerful right-foot shot that Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima could only deflect into his net.

“We pressed in the second half and got a goal,” Sneijder said. “This is the kind of game we maybe could have got two or three goals, but we won it and that’s great.”

It was the Inter Milan playmaker’s 15th goal in 63 internationals.

“Our players did everything they could, but we could not beat the Netherlands,” Japan coach Takeshi Okada said. “We feel sorry for the fans.”

The Netherlands, however, again failed to live up to its billing as one of the most fluent attacking teams of the tournament. The team struggled to a 2-0 victory over Denmark in its first Group E match, while Japan had a 1-0 victory over Cameroon.

Underdog Algeria held the Three Lions to a second disappointing World Cup draw, a 0-0 tie that left the Group C wide open and is sure to have English fans furious after their team arrived in South Africa as a favorite.

“If we want to stay in this tourney to the later stages we have to improve,” England midfielder Steven Gerrard said.

“We know the job we’ve got to go do, win the last game. You know to play at this level you’ve got to handle it, play under the pressure.”

With Wayne Rooney held scoreless for the seventh straight match, England lacked its touch against an opponent fighting to avoid becoming the first nation eliminated from the World Cup.

After Friday’s games, Slovenia had four points to lead Group C, while England and the United States both had two. Algeria had one.

England already gave the U.S. a 1-1 draw when goalkeeper Robert Green muffed Clint Dempsey’s 25-yard shot in the opener. Now it has to face its inability to beat Algeria, the lowest-ranked team (30th) in the group.

Now, Slovenia, England and the United States each control their own destinies headed into Group C’s final matches. Algeria is still alive but will need some help to advance.

The United States made a dramatic comeback from two goals down at halftime to draw 2-2 with Slovenia and rescue their World Cup chances on Friday.

Slovenia took a surprise 2-0 lead by halftime, outplaying the Americans and scoring with goals from Valter Birsa in the 13th minute and Zlatan Ljubijankic in the 42nd.

But Landon Donovan scored a brilliant individual goal three minutes after the break and as the Americans poured forwards, Michael Bradley, son of coach Bob Bradley, grabbed an equalizer eight minutes from time.

The U.S. nearly won the game five minutes from the end when a free kick was swung into the Slovenia area and Maurice Edu directed the ball into the net but the referee blew for an infringement.

U.S. players protested furiously and were left fuming at the decision after the game.

“I am a little bit gutted to be honest. I don’t know how they stole that third goal from us. It’s too bad because that was a fair goal I think,” Donovan said.

“I saw a good finish and a good goal. I’m not sure what the call was, he wouldn’t tell us what the call was.”

U.S. coach Bradley was also puzzled by the decision.

“We still don’t know why the goal was disallowed…Noone knows. It is important to understand that the players put a lot of emotion into the game and now they want a fair outcome,” coach Bradley said.

France were threatened by an embarrassing early World Cup exit after a surprise 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their second Group A game on Thursday.

Substitute forward Javier Hernandez beat an offside trap, raced into the box unchallenged and twisted his way past France keeper Hugo Lloris to put Mexico ahead on 64 minutes.

Veteran forward Cuauhtemoc Blanco doubled the advantage from the penalty spot on 79 minutes after Pablo Barrera was brought down by Eric Abidal.

The 1998 champions have just one point from two games before facing hosts South Africa in their final pool game next week. Even a win might not be enough for them to qualify and escape another disaster after their Euro 2008 flop.

Uruguay and Mexico, who top the group with four points each, will both qualify if they draw next week, eliminating in the process France and South Africa, both on one point.

Mexico is now level on points with Uruguay, both with four. France and South Africa both have one point but still have a chance to advance.

France has to beat South Africa and hope Mexico and Uruguay don’t draw their match in Tuesday’s final group games.

“There’s one match left. We’ll play for pride and hope for a miracle. We needed a draw to keep our fate in our hands and couldn’t get it.”

France winger Florent Malouda said the team had the last game to “save our pride.”

France were outplayed for the first 45 minutes during which they did not create a single chance. Mexico, by contrast, came close to scoring on several occasions, first when forward Carlos Vela raced into the box unchallenged early on but missed the target.

The France fans shivered again on 19 minutes when full back Carlos Salcido fired just wide from the edge of the box. The same player threatened again eighth minutes later, shooting straight at Lloris from close range.

France were hardly better in the second half, although they did have a chance on 54 minutes when a shot from just outside the area by Malouda flew narrowly over the bar.

That was far from enough, however, and coach Domenech’s men, who have frustrated their fans with uninspiring performances for years, can expect another stiff challenge against South Africa next Tuesday in Bloemfontein.

With their fate out of their hands, they will have to face that match without holding midfielder Jeremy Toulalan, who will be suspended after picking his second yellow card of the tournament.

With their fans outcheering the vuvuzelas at Soccer City, the Albiceleste beat South Korea 4-1 in a Group B match Thursday, giving them six points off two victories. They could clinch a spot in the knockout round, depending on the outcome of the Nigeria-Greece match later Thursday.

In a biting wind, Maradona’s team put on one of the best performances of the tournament, perhaps only challenged by Germany in its 4-0 win over Australia.

The Argentines had 11 shots on goal to just two for South Korea and controlled possession for 57 percent of the match.

The Argentines took the lead in the 17th minute when Park Chu-young deflected in a free kick from Messi. Higuain made it 2-0 in the 33rd after Nicolas Burdisso passed along a cross from Maxi Rodriguez.

In first-half injury time, Lee Chung-yong pounced on a defensive mistake to close the gap, but Higuain’s two second-half goals—in the 76th and 80th minutes—put the game away.

Messi made a great run to set up Higuain’s second goal. He had a shot blocked, got the rebound and hit the post with a second strike. The ball bounced to Higuain, who tapped it in. South Africa avoided becoming the first World Cup host to lose its opener. Bafana Bafana can now focus on trying to get to the next round for the first time, and a victory on Youth Day would put it on the brink of reaching that goal.

South Africa looks to commemorate the holiday when it faces Uruguay in a key Group A match in Pretoria on Wednesday.

A win against Uruguay in its second match would give host South Africa a great chance at advancing to the next round.

Expected to struggle as host, South Africa was solid in a 1-all draw with reigning CONCACAF champion Mexico in the World Cup opener Friday.

All four teams in Group A have one point after Uruguay played France to a scoreless tie Friday. France and Mexico meet Thursday.

Diego Forlan scored two goals to help give Uruguay a 3-0 victory over South Africa on Wednesday and push the World Cup host team closer to becoming the first to go out in the first round.

Forlan first scored from a deflected 25-meter (yard) shot in the 24th minute and converted a penalty in the 80th to give Uruguay its first World Cup victory since a group game at the 1990 competition.

Alvaro Pereira added the third goal in injury time, heading the ball off his knee and into the net from Luis Suarez’s cross.

Uruguay has four points from two games in Group A and is closing in on a spot in the next round, while South Africa has one and needs to beat France on Tuesday to have any chance of staying in the competition.

South Africa goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was sent off by referee Massimo Busacca for giving away the penalty when he tripped Suarez in the area in the 79th.

For South Africa, it was a grim reminder that sheer enthusiasm doesn’t match up to well-organized play from a vastly more experienced football nation.

The game followed the pattern of this World Cup as another match of misplaced passes and defenders tightly marking forwards, stifling dribbles and shooting opportunities.

Siphiwe Tshabalala, whose goal against Mexico gave South Africa hope of reaching the next round, was high and wide with two ambitious long-range efforts.

In the other Group A match, France and Mexico face each other Thursday in Polokwane.

Switzerland pulled off a shock victory at the World Cup on Wednesday, beating European champion Spain 1-0 in their Group H opening group match.

Gelson Fernandes bundled the ball into the net in the 52nd minute in one of Switzerland’s few attacks, ending Spain’s run of 12 straight wins and handing the Spanish team its second loss in 50 games.

Spain dominated possession throughout the match, but could find no way through Switzerland’s determined defense.

Jean Beausejour scored the only goal as Chile beat Honduras 1-0 in their Group H opening match on Wednesday and secure their first World Cup victory in 48 years.

Beausejour scored in the 34th minute, rounding off a slick move from the Chileans.

Playmaker Matias Fernandez split the Honduras defence with a delightful pass, releasing Mauricio Isla down the right flank.

His cross from the byline was met at the front post by Honduran defender Sergio Mendoza, with Beausejour in close attendance. Mendoza tried to clear the ball but it cannoned off the Chilean into the Honduran net.

The Chileans deserved their victory at the Mbombela Stadium and almost added a second in the 64th minute when a diving header from centre back Waldo Ponce produced a brilliant reaction save from Noel Valladares in the Honduras goal.

But despite their pressure the South Americans struggled to kill the game off, and at times the Hondurans looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

Chile’s victory came 48 years to the day after they last won a World Cup match—a third-place play-off tie against Yugoslavia on home soil in 1962.

Since then the Chileans had been to four World Cups, played 13 matches and had failed to win a single one.

Honduras are still looking for their first World Cup win. This is only their second appearance in the finals, their first ending without victory in 1982.

Maicon and Elano scored a goal apiece in the second half and Brazil broke through a solid North Korea defense to win its first 2010 World Cup match 2-1 on a frigid Tuesday night.

Brazil escaped with a hard-fought victory in the Group G match after struggling to get past the defensive setup of the North Koreans, who are making their first World Cup appearance in 44 years and arrived as the tournament’s lowest-ranked team.

Maicon put Brazil ahead after a through ball from midfielder Elano, making a run on the right side and firing into the far corner from a tight angle as North Korea goalkeeper Ri Myong Guk went for the cross.

Elano added to the lead after a well-timed pass from Robinho.

Ji Yun Nam scored for North Korea in the 89th minute in 34-degree temperatures with a wind-chill of 24.

New Zealand defender Winston Reid headed an equaliser in the dying seconds to earn a 1-1 draw with Slovakia and secure his country’s first ever World Cup point in their Group F opener on Tuesday.

Fullback Reid popped up to glance a header past Jan Mucha that went in off the foot of the post to bring the All Whites level after Robert Vittek had put Slovakia in front five minutes after halftime in what had been a fairly pedestrian contest.

Until New Zealand’s late strike Slovakia, making their World Cup debut as an independent nation, had seemed set to top the group ahead of world champions Italy and Paraguay who drew 1-1 in the group opener on Monday.

Vittek scored when he met a diagonal Stanislav Sestak cross with a powerful header from 10 meters after Reid had missed the ball completely in the cold and windy conditions at the Royal Bafokeng stadium.

It was a rare moment of quality in a dreary game during which New Zealand, using a 3-4-3 formation, largely frustrated the cautious Slovaks who appeared reinvigorated after advice at the interval about how to approach the second half.

The Slovaks lifted their tempo and pushed forward more aggressively from then on and gave New Zealand few chances to regain a foothold in the game, their superior technique and movement giving them control of possession.

Italy opened the defense of its World Cup title with a laborious 1-1 draw against Paraguay on Monday.

Paraguay took advantage of its first shot on goal to take the lead in the 39th minute. Antolin Alcaraz outjumped Italy’s 36-year-old captain Fabio Cannavaro and Daniele De Rossi for a header following a free kick from Aureliano Torres and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon had no chance for a save.

De Rossi made up for the opening goal by equalizing in the 63rd, sliding in to redirect a corner kick from Simone Pepe. It was a solid start for the AS Roma midfielder, who was suspended for four games during Italy’s victorious 2006 run after bloodying the face of United States defender Brian McBride. with a sharp elbow.

Already without injured midfielder Andrea Pirlo, however, Italy’s fortunes took another hit when it lost perhaps its most valuable player—Buffon—after the first half. The 32-year-old Buffon was removed in favor of inexperienced backup Federico Marchetti due to an apparent back problem.

After a day of often intense rain, the match kicked off under a drizzle, leaving the pitch slippery. Temperatures stood at 8 degrees Celsius (46 Fahrenheit), but the swirling winds coming off the ocean made it feel colder.

There were relatively few fans from Italy and Paraguay among the near capacity crowd of 62,869 at the Green Point Stadium, although the usual buzz of vuvuzelas made it difficult to determine exactly.

Italy was organized from the start, pushing up the right flank with Gianluca Zambrotta and Pepe, but the Azzurri had trouble getting the ball to Gilardino.

Paraguay was content to sit back and wait for counterattacks and didn’t venture into Italy’s half until the 20-minute mark, when the South Americans won a couple corners.

Japan earned its first World Cup victory on foreign soil Monday when Keisuke Honda scored in the first half for a 1-0 victory over uninspired Cameroon in Group E of the World Cup.

After a sloppy first 30 minutes, Japan broke the tie in the 39th minute when Daisuke Matsui’s curling cross from the right drifted over the heads of Cameroon defenders Nicolas Nkoulou and Stephane Mbia. The ball fell to Honda at the back post and the striker neatly controlled it and sent it past goalkeeper Hamidou Souleymanou.

Despite an attack led by Samuel Eto’o, Cameroon never really challenged Japan keeper Eiji Kawashima. The Africans struggled to possess the ball and generate any rhythm up front, and even when they put a few passes together, the buildup usually was wasted by poor crosses.

Germany scored two goals in each half and Tim Cahill was sent off as three-time champion Germany beat Australia 4-0 Sunday in Group D of the World Cup.

Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose scored in the first 30 minutes as Australia coach Pim Verbeek’s defensive tactics backfired, and Thomas Mueller and Cacau added the others against an overwhelmed Australian defense.

Cahill was red-carded in the 56th minute for a late challenge on Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The dominant win, played in front of 62,660 fans at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, came without injured captain Michael Ballack.

Podolski shot into the roof of the net in the eighth minute when Mesut Oezil passed to Mueller on the right and the young Bayern Munich midfielder cut the ball back. Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer could only deflect the ball on its way in.

Klose doubled the lead when he got in front of Lucas Neill to head a cross from Philipp Lahm powerfully past Schwarzer.

The strike drew him level with Juergen Klinsmann as Germany’s second most prolific World Cup marksman. Gerd Mueller tops the list with 14 goals.

Thomas Mueller made it 3-0 in the 68th, dragging the ball back to avoid a lunge from Scott Chipperfield and sending a low shot in off the post.

Asamoah Gyan scored on an 84th-minute penalty kick Sunday as Ghana beat Serbia 1-0 in a Group D match at the World Cup.

Zdravko Kuzmanovic needlessly handled a cross in the area, then argued the call and yellow card he received. Gyan drove the penalty kick high to the left for the only goal at Loftus Versfeld stadium.

Previously, Ghana missed a series of headers. John Mensah and Gyan missed the target and Dede Ayew headed against the goalpost.

Serbia’s only real threat near the end was a shot by Milos Krasic that was brilliantly saved by Richard Kingson.

The Serbs had Aleksandar Lukovic sent off in the 74th minute for a second yellow card.

Slovenia recorded their first ever World Cup finals victory on Sunday with a 1-0 win over 10-man Algeria in their Group C clash.

Captain Robert Koren scored the only goal of a poor game in the 79th minute to give Slovenia the three points after they lost all three matches in their previous finals appearance in 2002.

Algeria had substitute Abdelkadel Ghezzal sent-off in the 72nd minute after only being on the pitch for 14 minutes.

Koren, pivotal in West Brom's promotion to the Premier League last season, scored in the 79th minute with a well struck right footed effort from just outside the area but Faouzi Chaouchi should have done better instead of mis-timing his drive and seeing the ball bobble over him.

The first-half had offered little in terms of excitement as warm, clear conditions greeted the outsiders in a mini-league expected to be dominated by 1966 champions England and the United States, who drew 1-1 in Rustenburg the previous night.

A free-kick in front of goal and outside the penalty area offered the North Africans the first chance and goalkeeper Samir Handanovic did well to tip over a Nadir Belhadj shot.

Slovenia next meet USA in Johannesburg's Ellis Park on 18 June, while Algeria will try to rebound against group favourites England the same day in Cape Town.

An apparently harmless 25-meter (yard) left-foot shot from Clint Dempsey in the 40th minute went straight at Green but the ball bounced off his right glove and trickled over the line for an equalizer.

England captain Steven Gerrard had given England the lead in the fourth minute, charging into the area and shooting with the outside of his foot past Tim Howard for his 17th international goal.

Uruguay's Nicolas Lodeiro picked up South Africa 2010's first red card as La Celeste held France to a 0-0 draw at Cape Town's Green Point Stadium.

Former champions France failed to set the World Cup alight on Friday as they struggled to a 0-0 draw against 10-man Uruguay in an uninspiring start to their campaign.

Rarely can a team have arrived at a World Cup with more baggage than France, unsettled by rumoured internal strife and criticised at home for poor form.

They did little to appease their detractors against the South Americans, with neither side able to take the early initiative in Group A after South Africa and Mexico drew 1-1 in the opening match of the tournament.

France coach Raymond Domenech raised a few more eyebrows by leaving not just Thierry Henry on the bench but also Florent Malouda.

Nicolas Anelka was tasked with the main goalscoring duties and Arsenal's Abou Diaby drafted in for the Chelsea midfielder.

But they looked far from convincing at a packed Green Point Stadium.

"It's frustrating not to have won. Perhaps we weren't quite calm enough or precise enough, but they defended very well and they have a certain quality to their game," said Domenech.

"Clearly I would have preferred 1-0 but that is not what occured."

He was clearly disappointed with the inability of his team to get a goal.

"I am happy with the overall performance, but we didn't finish as strongly as we could have done. We didn't have the finishing touches, which is a pity," he said.

France skipper Patrice Evra said he saw plenty to please him in the game.

Rafael Marquez scored to give Mexico a 1-1 draw with host South Africa on Friday in the opening game of the World Cup.

Andres Guardado floated in a left-footed cross from the left and Marquez was left completely unmarked to control the ball and score in the 79th minute.

Siphiwe Tshabalala had given the host nation a dream start, finishing off a well-worked move in the 55th to set off wild celebrations at Soccer City.

The South Africans came close to scoring a winner in the 90th when Katlego Mphela got clear of two markers but his shot hit the near post.

Later Friday, France and Uruguay face each other in the 2nd match of Group A match.
