PREVIEW
Four years of anticipation could boil down to just 90 minutes on Saturday as the United States takes on England in the teams’ vital opening World Cup match.

The opening game in Group C brings together two countries, England and USA, with a history of close relations and comradeship off the field but very little in the way of history on it. Except for one startling exception: the 1950 FIFA World Cup clash in Belo Horizonte which the Americans, seen as a 'ragtag' outfit back home, took a battering ram to convention and upset their fancied opponents 1-0. With Slovenia and Algeria also in the group at South Africa 2010, the Rustenburg game could be pivotal in the fight for qualifying places.

Sixty years removed and 4,449 miles from that stadium in Brazil, the nations finally meet again Saturday in a game that matters, a rematch in this year’s World Cup opener for both teams.

UPDATE: England struck first, but USA's Clint Dempsey scored on a goalie miscue as Team USA rallied for a 1-1 draw.

GAME RECAP
The United States held England to a 1-1 draw in their World Cup opener Saturday, with a stunning blunder by England goalkeeper Robert Green costing his team victory.

An apparently harmless 25-meter (yard) left-foot shot from Clint Dempsey in the 40th minute went straight at Green but the ball bounced off his right glove and trickled over the line for an equalizer.

England captain Steven Gerrard had given England the lead in the fourth minute, charging into the area and shooting with the outside of his foot past Tim Howard for his 17th international goal.

England, pursuing its first World Cup title since 1966, created more chances but the Americans held firm under pressure with a string of saves from Howard.
