UPDATE: South Africa beats France 2-1, but eliminated

GAME RECAP
South Africa’s slim chances of reaching the next round of the World Cup are dwindling after Florent Malouda scored for 10-man France to trim the host nation’s lead to 2-1.

Bongani Khumalo headed South Africa in front from a 20th-minute corner before awful marking allowed Katlego Mphela to scramble the ball home from close range in the 37th.

Mphela hit the crossbar in the 51st as South Africa streamed forward, but Malouda tapped in in the 70th from Franck Ribery’s pass.

Yoann Gourcuff was sent off in the 25th for elbowing Macbeth Sibaya.

Bafana Bafana can advance with a big win but a draw between Mexico and Uruguay in the other Group A game would knock both sides out whatever their result.

South Africa's 2-1 win over France proved not enough for either side to advance.

Bongani Khumalo and Katlego Mphela netted first-half goals for the South Africans but could not prevent their homeland becoming the first World Cup host nation to crash out in the first round.
